    Water Conservation: McKinney Texas

Texas Summers are hot, and this year is no exception.  One resource that has been on my mind lately is water. What are the policies for water conservation in McKinney, Texas? Where does McKinney get their water supply?

How are thinks looking for McKinney and the Dallas area with the lack of rain?I did some internet research about water conservation in McKinney as well as Texas as a whole. First, on the City of McKinney website I found out that McKinney residents are allowed to only water twice a week, and only outside the hours of 10 am to 6 pm. The McKinney website said that the first watering days correspond to trash pickup days, and the second is three days post.  I found a detailed addendum regarding water violation and laws for McKinney Texas also. This document was designed as a piece of legislation provided for the community to understand the standards.

The City of McKinney gets their water from the North Texas Municipal Water District. I found their website particularly interesting and there are a lot of facts regarding our water supply for McKinney and the North Texas area.

I found a McKinney Texas press release during my website search also. This flyer informed me that we are currently under further water conservation measures, not only due to drought, but to the Zebra Mussel infestation in one of the main source lakes.  Because of this infestation, 25% of the Dallas’ area’s water supply is out of commission. In the process of doing this research for McKinney water conservation, I found a website called WaterIQ which is designed for raising awareness and providing water education. I also found a website named Texas Conserve Water whish is desined for providing information regarding the improtance of water conservation.

Since in McKinney, we already have the water conservation measures in place all year round, this currently changes little as far as watering habits go.

On the WaterIQ website, there is a little quick reference search bar for some tips on how to conserve water in your area. When I typed in my McKinney zip code I was confused because the first tip was “Sweep  your driveway.” When I read this statement I thought, “how is sweeping my dry driveway going to conserve water?” But after I thought about it for a minute, I realized that some people clean grass clippings and leaves off of their driveway with a water hose, not a broom or a leaf blower. Anyway, I was glad to figure out that McKinney, Texas water conservation tip.
